Will I have to cut weight?

No. Irondale wrestling promotes eating right and working hard. By applying a good diet and a strong work ethic, wrestlers on the team will gravitate to their optimum wrestling weight. The decision as to what weight an athlete will wrestle at is determined by him and his parents. No wrestler at Irondale will ever be forced to cut weight. The MSHSL also has a form that is filled out by a trainer, doctor and parent that specifies his lowest allowable weight for the season. Weight classes are as follows 103, 112, 119, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145, 152, 160, 171, 189, 215 and Heavyweight (285).

Do I have to wear a singlet?

The singlet is the competition uniform that is used by wrestlers. According to the MSHSL a singlet must be worn during competition. During practice wrestlers wear a comfortable pair of workout shorts and a t-shirt. Singlets are used for competition only.

Why should I wrestle?

Wrestling is a great sport that requires dedication, hard work and a willingness to learn. These are attributes that contribute to all aspects of life, not just sports. Wrestling also helps with agility, strength, balance and perseverance. These are attributes that apply in many different sports.

Will I get cauliflower ear?

Cauliflower ear comes from repeated rubbing of the ears. Every wrestler on the Irondale team is issued a headgear (ear protection) at the beginning of the season. Consistent use of headgear will protect against cauliflower ear.

Will I get a skin infection?

There is a possibility for anyone to get a skin infection. The Irondale coaching staff disinfects the mat prior to every practice. Doing this, along with showering immediately after practice, reduces the risk of skin infections.

Has anyone I have heard of wrestle?

Many famous and influential people in U.S. society wrestled and attribute much of their success in life to their time spent wrestling. Political figures like Abraham Lincoln, Dennis Hastert and George Stephanopoulos were wrestlers. Tom Cruise, Robin Williams and Alec, Billy, and Stephen Baldwin were also wrestlers. There are countless players in the NFL that have a wrestling background such as Ray Lewis, Ronde Barber, and Stephen Neal (Neal didn’t play FB in college; he was a 2x NCAA HWT champion).
